PORT ROYAL: It's been a frustrating two-month stretch for Greg Hodnett and the Mike Heffner-owned team.
After a torrid early-summer pace, the team has only won three 410 Sprint Car events since the calendar flipped over to July. But any struggles were non-existent Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway.
Hodnett is back.
The Spring Grove driver made a drastic lane change, moving to the extreme bottom of the track and dominated the 25-lap Sprint Car feature. It was Hodnett's seventh win of the season at the Juniata County oval.
"When the track is wide open around the top, it's just not my deal," Hodnett said. "When the racetrack is really good around the top, it doesn't leave many options to move around.
"We were in a couple of crashes and got a couple of bent cars. We didn't notice it until we looked hard, and now we got our stuff straightened out."
Rick Lafferty got the jump off the front row and took the lead over Curt Stroup and Aaron Ott. Hodnett was on the move early, going to the top of Turn 1 and bottom of Turn 3 to advance from eighth to fourth.
Joey Hershey brought out the first caution on Lap 3, when he stopped in Turn 2. Lucas Wolfe owned the restart, driving past Cisney, Hodnett and Stroup to take fourth.
Just as the third circuit was scored, Trenton Sheaffer flipped in Turn 3 to bring out the red flag. Ott stalked Lafferty for the lead on the restart, finally wrestling the top spot away coming out of Turn 4 on Lap 5.
Ott built a 3.1-second lead by Lap 9. Just as the lap was scored, T.J. Stutts spun in the second corner.
