Fayetteville driver gets fifth win for as many car owners, triumphs over All Stars; Devin Hart wins econo late model title by five points over Krape

PORT ROYAL, Pa. – Lance Dewease of Fayetteville marched to the front to record a historic, milestone victory at Port Royal Speedway on Saturday night, becoming the first ever five-time winner of the prestigious Tuscarora 50 for sprint cars while also recording his 100th career checkered flag at the historic oval.

Dewease started eighth in the stellar sprint car field sanctioned by the All Star Circuit of Champions and took the lead on the 12th circuit when leader Greg Hodnett broke the rear on his machine.

Both drivers were vying to make history by becoming the first ever five-time Tuscarora 50 champion.

A previous Tuscarora 50 winner in 1994 for Walt Dyer, in 2001 for Joe Harz, in 2002 for Al Hamilton and in 2006 for Pete Postupack, Dewease’s fifth win in the event came for his fifth different Tuscarora champion car owner in the form of Don Kreitz Jr., who himself owns three career event wins as a driver.

In the 22-lap econo late model main, Tim Krape of Bellefonte won the final point race of the season while Port Royal’s Devin Hart finished second and scored the 2016 track title by just five points over Krape.

In the sprint car division, Lancaster’s Doug Esh secured the 2016 crown as well, his first at Port Royal Speedway.

Greg Hodnett drew the pole for the start of the 49th annual running of the Tuscarora 50 flanked by TJ Stutts.

And Hodnett took control over third starter Dale Blaney and Sheldon Haudenschild when action began.

The races first caution flag unfurled with eight laps complete and the top three unchanged while Dewease restarted sixth.

And the next four laps found Dewease simply pouring on the power as he darted by the cars in front of him with ease, up to fifth on lap nine and up to third on lap 10.

On the next lap, Dewease blasted by Dale Blaney to be sitting in second and closing on leader Hodnett when Hodnett puffed blue smoke out of his car on the backstretch and coasted to a stop as Dewease drove by as the new leader with 12 away.

But the caution unfurled due to debris from Hodnett’s busted rear end, regrouping the field with 13 laps to go before the mandatory stoppage on lap 25.

The next driver to turn up the wick was 10th starter and Friday night winner Stevie Smith as the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver took fifth on the restart.

He got by Cap Henry for fourth on the 14th tour and then worked on Haudenschild and Blaney during the final stages of the first half to muscle into second, far behind Dewease with five laps to go until the break.

Blaney, Haudenschild and Henry chased the lead duo on the restart.

Henry surprised many by racing with Blaney for third when action resumed but all eyes were on Smith as he attempted to pass Dewease for the lead.

For the first several laps after the restart, Smith stayed within striking distance as Dewease struggled to navigate the first and second turns but turns three and four were his savior as his mount traversed the low side of those turns perfectly, allowing him to make up the ground he lost to Smith at the other end of the track on every circuit.

A final caution with 19 laps to go for a flat right rear tire on Aaron Ott’s racer set up a final restart with 13th starter Lucas Wolfe now up to fifth.

Again Smith stayed close to Dewease for the next several laps but after numerous back to back laps, Dewease’s advantage to grow and grow as he checked out over the final 15 laps to record the victory by nearly eight seconds over the rest of the field.

Dale Blaney rode home third followed by an impressive run by Cap Henry and Danny Dietrich, who started the race ninth.

Sixth through 10th went to Wolfe, Haudenschild, defending event winner Brent Marks, Blane Heimbach and Chad Kemenah.

Heats for the 41 cars went to Heimbach, Blaney, Haudenschild and Stutts with Mike Wagner scoring the B Main.

Fast time was set by Danny Dietrich with a lap of 16.479 seconds.

Dewease took home $12, 975 for the victory including lap money.

“This feels great. It’s an honor to do it for these guys,” Dewease said on the Port Royal Speedway victory lane stage.

“I think I may have won this race with five different car owners, too, so that makes it pretty special. I wanted this one so bad all year for these guys. We’ve been really good everywhere we’ve went. We had a really good racecar last night, but had some mechanical problems that were nobody’s fault. I’m having a lot of fun driving for this race team. We are all really enjoying this limited schedule. We savor every one of these things.”

“That first 25 laps, I didn’t run that hard,” Dewease explained.

“I knew we could go pretty soft on tires because I’m not that hard on tires. We came in during that red and my guys said my tires were still really good. So, I knew I could get going then. I just wanted to get inside the top-four before the break. I just found a line and was able to reel those guys in. You have to be there in the end in this deal. That’s what it’s all about. ”

Hart started second in the 22-lap econo late model main to record the title and he finished there with Krape taking the win.

Andrew Yoder rode home third followed by Harold Ranck Jr., and Ryan Walls.

Twin heats went to Krape and Hart.
